Barcelona is one of the centres of Mediterranean cuisine and one of the best places to enjoy its culinary delights is in the Mercat de Boqueria, where visitors can find a huge variety of fresh, quality products prepared in an innovative way that can please even the fussiest palate.

Located between Las Ramblas and the Raval neighbourhood, the Mercat de Boqueria is the oldest market in Barcelona. Originally named el Mercado de Sant Josep due to the fact that is was built in a neighbourhood which was home to a convent of the same name, it was officially inaugurated in 1840. The origin of the market, however, goes all the way back to the 17th century when walking salesmen and farmers from the nearby land would go and sell their products ihttps://blog.hcchotels.com/las-ramblas-the-heart-of-barcelona/n street stalls.

When visitors walk into the Mercat de la Boqueria, they enter a world full of smells, flavours and colours. It is considered to be one of the best markets on an international level, and therefore its fame makes it a place that is frequented by many tourists who want to experience this gastronomical delight.

As visitors walk around the market, there is a showcase of fresh quality products of all colours and types. The first stalls that you come across are filled with perfectly presented fruit and vegetables and tourists can often be seen taking pictures of the fresh fruit which is peeled and sliced.

In the central part of the market shaped in the form of an ellipse, all of the fish stalls can be found which are filled with products brought in from the marina in Barcelona. At the far end of the market the meat stalls are located and although they are not as frequently visited as the fruit stalls at the front, they have attractive and creative displays particularly with small pieces of Iberian ham. Dotted around the market visitors can also find stalls which sell nuts, specialized food stalls and outdoor restaurants where visitors can enjoy delights for all five of their senses.

The Mercat de la Boqueria is filled with modern local and international cuisine as well as food stands which have been passed from generation to generation and maintain the traditional side of the market.

A visit to the Mercat de la Boqueria is a visit to taste all kinds of gastronomy and a place to awaken all the senses.
