We present you with the best of the Ebro Delta and Amposta

Encanyissada Lagoon (Ebro delta)

This is the largest lagoon in the Ebro Delta and is found within the protected areas of the natural park, in the right hemidelta.

It is characterised by the halophytic and freshwater vegetation that surrounds it, the latter being the most prevalent, in addition to vegetation adapted to saline and halophilic land.

The fauna in the area is generally that associated with freshwater lagoons, like reed birds, anatidae, and herons (purple heron and grey heron), etc.

The area has four wildlife observation points around the lagoon. A cycle path skirts the north-western part and has interpretive panels explaining the area’s ecosystem.

Location: the lagoon is located within the Ebro Delta, where there is also the beautiful town of Poblenou del Delta. In 2013, the Ebro Delta was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

Casa de Fusta (Ebro delta)

The Casa de Fusta (Wooden House), situated beside the Encanyissada lagoon, was imported from Canada for use as a hunting lodge by the bourgeoisie of Barcelona.

These days, and since the creation of the Ebro Delta Natural Park, it houses a permanent, interactive exhibition on the lagoons in the Delta and most of birds that inhabit them. It also displays some of the equipment that was once used for traditional hunting and fishing, and serves as the information point for the park.

In this area of the park, visitors can enjoy the flora and fauna around the Encanyissada lagoon from the several viewpoints. A cycle path skirts the north-western part of the lagoon, dotted with interpretive panels giving information about this unusual ecosystem. There is an information service located next to the Casa de Fusta, where they sell handmade products from the area, various publications, and interesting material about the Delta.

Location: Partida de la Cuixota, s/n, Amposta.

La Tancada Lagoon (Ebro Delta)

It is the second largest lagoon of the Ebro Delta Natural Park.

In this area, there are two viewpoints from which you can see a wide variety of native and migratory birds and natural vegetation of the area. It is frequent to see flamingos and several species of ducks.

Bordering the lagoon there is a bike path of low difficulty, asphalted and without gradient, accessible from the road that has continuity until the Laguna de l’Encanyissada, the largest of the Natural Park.

The urbanization of the Eucaliptus and Poblenou del Delta are located 3 km away.

La Tancada was declared a Natural Reserve.

Eucaliptus beach (Ebro Delta)

In the municipality of Amposta we find the beach of the Eucaliptus located just 15 minutes away.

It is one of the most impressive virgin beaches of the Ebro Delta for its unusual landscape richness, surrounded by a unique natural environment and for being one of the quietest of easy access.

It is the ideal place to spend a good day with family and children thanks to its dimensions, the fine sand, the fauna and the natural dunes that are formed in it.

Ullals of Baltasar (Amposta)

They are outputs of groundwater from the rain of the mountains of Montsia and Els Ports.

There are in total about 17. With an extension of 10 ha, they measure from 3 to 50 meters and have a depth of 2 to 7 meters with a temperature that ranges from 17 to 19 degrees throughout the year.

It is the only freshwater environment in the entire Delta. The flora and fauna of the place is different from what we can see in any other area of the Natural Park. We found several species of strange amphibians of the Delta and it is one of the few places in Catalonia where in spring you can find water lilies spontaneously.

Way of Sirga (Amposta)

The route flows along the ancient road of Sirga deltaico, recently reconditioned, runs along the banks of the river Ebro. Formerly animals and men pulled ropes pushing the goods ships to help them continue their navigation on the river when the wind or current were not favourable. The route can be done by walking or by bicycle and has sections of land, asphalt and bike path. Walk about 20 km from Amposta until you reach Migjorn beach, next to the Illa de Buda. Through this route we will see the Illa de Gracia.

Municipal Market (Amposta)

This building was erected in 1947 by architect F. J. Barba Corsini, on the former site known as the Fábrica, where there once stood a soap factory and a rice-drying facility. It was a place where people went to enjoy themselves playing traditional games.

The municipal market stands there now. It consists of a nave with covered arcades along the sides, where there are various shops. Above these are some large windows with magnificent stained-glass, made using the medieval leading technique, depicting scenes of wildlife from the Ebro Delta.

The market supplies fresh produce from the region that form part of the traditional Mediterranean cuisine, including fish, meat, vegetables, fruit, bread, cakes and pastries, etc.

Location: Av. Alcalde Palau, 68, Amposta.

Suspension Bridge (Amposta)

Construction on the bridge began in 1915, after the completion of works directed by the author of the project, the engineer J. Eugenio Ribera. It was inaugurated in 1921.

The bridge’s main features are the two stone pilasters in the form of a triumphal arch on both sides of the river, and the metal structure supported by cables. It significantly improved communications for the town, being the first permanent bridge across the lower section of the Ebro river, and for many years the one with the most light between its columns in Spain.

The Amposta Suspension Bridge is a symbol of the town.

Location: In the town of Amposta.

Modernist Houses (Amposta)

Most of the modernist buildings in the town can be found on Avenida de la Rápita, including the houses of Fàbregues, Morales Talarn, Macià, and Palau Fàbregas.

In Victoria Street, we notice the bright colours of the modernist Notary House, which looks like a small Moorish palace. On Sant Joan street is the ancestral house of Miralles, a medieval building which has been renovated, and Also on Avenida Sant Jaume is the house of Enric Ramon, where the tourist office is located.

Amposta Castle (Amposta)

The remains of a medieval fortification in the historic quarter of Amposta, near the River Ebro, which was built on a former Iberian settlement.

Amposta Castle was built by the Moors in the 10th century. It enjoyed its greatest period of splendour when it was conquered by Ramón Berenguer IV and proclaimed the headquarters of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem under the Catalan-Aragonese Crown, and given the name of “castellania” of Amposta.

After many successive wars and plunderings, the first rice mill in the region of the Ebro was constructed here in the late 19th century. The importance of its legacy remained unknown to us for centuries, though these vestiges and splendours of the past have since been recovered. Today, the area around the Castle -the historical symbol of the city- is another space to enjoy in the town, a place for leisure, which offers public cultural and tourism facilities.

A series of information panels allows visitors to take an interpretive tour inside the castle grounds, where they can learn about the historical evolution of the architectural testimonies that have been conserved: the base of the tower of Sant Joan; the moats; the slender, pointed arches made of stone washed by the river; the former handmade soap factory; the Iberian silos; and several walls.

Location: In the town of Amposta.
