Fonts Bessones, an astounding magic and light show in Plaza Catalunya
As the long sunny days in Barcelona draw to a close, Plaza de Catalunya lights up and becomes a magical spectacle in its own right, all thanks to a symphony of perfectly choreographed lights, colours and music at the Fonts Bessones (twin fountains). A dizzying display of water and light only adds to the attraction in this, one of the busiest squares in Barcelona, where the old town meets the modern, cosmopolitan metropolis.
Located on the upper terrace of Plaza de Catalunya, the Fonts Bessones fountains are flanked by two statues from the Universal Exhibition of 1929, making this a must-see point on any whistlestop tour of Barcelona. After remodelling work that took place in 2016, the fountains now put on a show that perfectly blends the symphony of water, light and music of the Magical Fountain of Montjüic, but offers enough other things to see and do nearby to make it an unmissable part of your itinerary.
The stars of the show are the 4 geysers, a crown of 40 springs and a water curtain that perfectly interprets the choreography of water, light, colours and sounds, all changing to the rhythm of the music. One of the most exciting features is undoubtedly the music. But visitors stumbling upon the fountains won’t be able to hear the melodies without a little magic… To enjoy the show in full, you’ll need to download a mobile app that synchronises with the water and perfectly accompanies the show to add a musical flavour to all the movements and colours before your eyes.
