The construction of St. Antoni Market began in 1879 and it was inaugurated in 1882. It was designed by architect Antoni Rovira i Trias and is a good example of the iron architecture common in the late 19th century. Above the main doorway is the date of construction and the Barcelona coat of arms, crowned by a bat.
The market is the oldest in the city and is currently undergoing remodeling work. The market stalls have been moved temporarily to a marquee in Ronda Sant Antoni, between the streets of Comte Urgell and Casanova.
The market is divided into different sections: clothing; fresh products including fruit, vegetables, meat, and fish; and the flea market, which is only held on Sundays and where you can find books, magazines, films, games, stamps and a whole host of other second-hand items and bargains. While the original market is being remodeled, the temporary market is being held in a marquee on Comte Urgell, the same street.
Address: The market is situated between the streets of Ronda Sant Antoni, Tamarit, Comte Urgell, and Manso.
