The Born is a neighbourhood in the city of Barcelona. It was established on sandy ground and was known as La Vilanova (New Town), or Vilanova de Mar to distinguish it from the other ‘Vilanovas’ that were built.
It was located next to a church called Santa Maria de las Arenas, now known as Santa María del Mar. In the centre lived people from the navy and from the 13th-century noblemen and merchants began to build houses, giving the neighbourhood a stately air.
In medieval times, there were jousting tournaments between knights and other combat games in the Paseo del Born, which gave the neighbourhood its name. ‘Born’ means: a place where combat games were held.
Today, the neighbourhood is an area of contrasts, with historical Barcelona living side by side with fashionable and innovative shops selling fashion, art and gastronomic products.
Some sights in the neighbourhood include: the church of Santa María del Mar; the Fossar de les Moreres (memorial plaza dedicated to defenders of the city during the War of the Spanish Succession); the former Born market and the Picasso Museum and Sala Montcada on Montcada street, among others.
Address: The neighbourhood is located between Ciutadella Park and Via Laietana, and between Francia train station and Sant Pere Més Alt street.
