The museum is world famous for showcasing some amazing artefacts and replicas as part of its exhibitions on various ships created in amazing detail.

Across the museum’s multiple rooms, you can explore the Galera Real, from which Juan de Austria fought in the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the Santa María, which took Christopher Columbus on his adventure to the Americas, as well as the Ictíneo I, one of the first submarines ever built in Spain.

A collection of period objects and relics at Barcelona Maritime Museum

Since 23 October 1936 – the date the museum first opened – this site has been home to a collection of maritime collections for the enjoyment and intrigue of visitors. More than 300,000 people visit the museum annually, exploring its many rooms reflecting the quality of objects collected throughout history.

Within the museum’s various exhibits, you’ll find objects and relics testifying to the naval power of the Spanish empire throughout the ages. Delve into the museum and discover all the treasures it hides.

A museum of national interest

In 2006, as part of the museum’s 75th anniversary celebrations, Barcelona Maritime Museum was officially declared a museum of national interest, in recognition and support of its successful history and a clear endorsement of its many high-quality exhibitions.

Maps, works of art, canvases and ancient instruments were all assessed by inspectors to determine the importance of the collection, which was clearly signalled by the final distinction.

We’ve given you just three reasons why visiting this fantastic museum is a great way to spend your time in the city, but don’t take our word for it – head down to the museum the next time you’re here and explore all the maritime treasure and secrets it holds.
