Barcelona is known for its vast array of amazing spaces that make it a city with a difference. And the old hospital of Sant Pau is certainly one of them, a place that’s well worth exploring on your trip to the city.

Antiguo Hospital Sant Pau

See the living history of the city at the ancienthospital of Sant Pau

Initially established as an in-patient hospital to cover all the medical needs of the Catalan people, the hospital was founded in 1401. Over the years, it has been extensively refurbished and remodelled to become what we see today.

The task of remodelling this modernist building was entrusted to one of the most famous architects in all of Barcelona, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a name that lends itself to Catalan modernism even today.

Two separate phases of construction and refurbishment were needed to complete the total of thirteen buildings that make up the old hospital in Sant Pau, finished in 1913, all of them careful to keep the modernist style intact.

Exhibitions and visits to the ancienthospital of Sant Pau

You can visit three different parts of the old hospital in Sant Pau, the Sant Salvador Pavilion, the Sant Rafael Pavilion, as well as the outdoor spaces, where you can soak in the amazing architecture of the buildings and surrounding gardens.

In the Sant Salvador Pavilion, you can enjoy a whirlwind tour through the history of medicine, where the institution’s entire heritage collection is available for viewing, from medical devices to scale models, as well as informative panels on the hospital complex itself. Furthermore, you’ll find direct references and exhibitions on the story of the architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

In the Sant Rafael Pavilion, meanwhile, you’ll be able to explore its interior, exactly as it wasredesigned at the start of the 20th century. You can also roam through the underground tunnels that connect the surrounding buildings and other spaces typical of the enormous complex.
