A different kind of fun on your next trip to Barcelona: ever heard of escape rooms?
If you’re planning a weekend getaway to Barcelona any time soon, one of the things you’ll surely be thinking about is what you can do for fun. Of course, you can simply turn up and see where the wind takes you – after all, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in Barcelona – but if you improvise, you run the risk of not really making the most of every last second you spend in the glorious Spanish city. So, by making plans in advance and seeing what’s out there, you can really make the most of your trip.
And if you were to take a moment and, say, start planning your whirlwind tour of Barcelona in four days, you’d quickly see that, besides your everyday tourist attractions, visiting some of the iconic museums or discovering some great restaurants, you’ll still have plenty of time left over for an activity that really makes your visit go off with a bang. And you might not have considered it yet, but why not really make the most of your time by trying something completely different, perhaps an escape room…
What is an escape room and how does it work?
Escape rooms, as the name might give away, are rooms or a set of rooms where you’re temporarily locked in and you need to escape to win the game by solving puzzles and riddles, following clues and overcoming a series of exciting challenges. All this needs to be done either individually or as part of a group – which is most common – but always within a certain time limit.
Almost all escape rooms have a theme, usually with environments and props from cinema or famous events in history, only adding even more realism to all the excitement. In some case, besides everything you see around you, there may also be characters and actors involved, depending on the size of the room and the complexity of the challenge. The rules of every escape room – which will be explained in detail before you begin – will always tell you whether or not certain props and actors can be interacted with, and how this should be done.
The whole objective of an escape room is to test your nerves, ingenuity and teamwork in a (somewhat!) tense environment, helping you experience the kind of challenges you’ve only ever seen in blockbuster thrillers or TV series before, only this time, it’s all real and all down to you to save the day! Typical themes include horror, suspense and other disturbing scenarios, though some are much more light-hearted and fun for the whole family. There are also escape rooms based on history, as well as those inspired by books and fairytales for younger escapees.
Ever thought of trying an escape room in Barcelona?
Normally, most escape rooms set a time limit of one hour for you to get out, and there are almost fifty different ones to try in Barcelona, from children’s and family-focussed rooms to those exclusively for over-18s, which might be a little more… ‘spicy’.
If you’ve never tried this kind of live action game before, Barcelona offers plenty of low-difficulty yet still thrilling escape rooms designed for beginners, perfect for your first escape experience. And when it comes to the theme, you have a huge variety to choose from. From an adventure where you need to save Gaudí’s study to a fight against the clock to save Aztec treasure from going down with a sinking ship… it’s all to play for right here in Barcelona.
