6. Somorrostro Beach

Today it is one of the most vibrant beaches, frequented by young people from all over the world, surrounded by nightlife venues and trendy restaurants.

It features a large influx of bathers and a ceaseless activity of sand artists, street musicians, and athletes.

Garraf Beach

Heading South from Barcelona’s beaches: jewels of the Coast of Barcelona and Costa Dorada

As you descend from Barcelona towards Tarragona, the coast shows highly varied landscapes. The plain of the Llobregat Delta gives way to the steep limestone cliffs of the Garraf massif, finally opening into the extensive stretches of fine, golden sand that name the Tarragona Costa Dorada.

The Beaches of El Prat (El Prat de Llobregat)

Located near the airport, the beaches of Remolar, Roberta, and Ricarda have undergone a model transformation. Thanks to the implementation of modern purification systems and the strict perimeter protection of the airport, this space stands out today as one of the best-preserved sandy areas in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.

The area is secluded by an extensive and thick coastal pine forest, free of artificial buildings. Its clean and calm waters are a delight for anyone looking to connect with virgin nature. In addition, just a few meters away is the Marine Animal Recovery Center (CRAM), an entity of international prestige dedicated to the conservation of marine fauna.

  • Available equipment: It features surveillance and lifeguard towers during the high season, public portable toilets, showers, and a regulated parking zone for vehicles and bicycles at the outer accesses. It does not have commercial premises or permanent beach bars to protect the natural environment.
  • PRM Accessibility: It features wooden walkways to access the beach from the parking area and adapted public toilets.
  • Location: Coastline of El Prat de Llobregat (Accessible via special urban buses in summer).

Beaches of Castelldefels

Once the delta is left behind, the coast opens up into an impressive extension of almost five kilometers of fine sand, divided into three sectors: La Pineda beach, Lluminetes beach, and El Baixador beach (the latter two distinguished with the Blue Flag). Due to their colossal dimensions and iconic wooden surveillance towers, many people humorously compare them to the famous American Miami Beach.

The great ecological value of Castelldefels lies in its recovered dune system, protected by institutional environmental plans. In these dunes grows an indigenous flora that colors the sand with a very characteristic purple hue during the flowering season, offering a beautiful and healthy natural environment for practicing wind sports like kitesurfing or walking with the family.

  • Available equipment: It offers hammock and umbrella rentals, sports zones and children’s areas, showers, toilets, rescue towers, water sports schools, and a seafront promenade full of beach bars and restaurants.
  • PRM Accessibility: Lluminetes and El Baixador beaches are fully accessible for people with reduced mobility, equipped with ramps, concrete and wooden walkways, reserved parking spaces, and amphibious chairs available upon request to the lifeguard service.
  • Location: Castelldefels Playa (Direct train connection via the R2 Sud line of Rodalies).

Garraf Beach (Sitges)

Located in the small seaside village of Garraf, wedged between the steep hills of the Coma Roja mountain range, this small beach with strikingly blue waters looks like something out of a period film. Its most unique and photographed feature is the 33 wooden fishermen’s huts painted white and green that sit directly on the sand.

These huts, which once served to store fishing gear, have been transformed into coveted second residences that preserve their historic charm intact. The area has its own railway station right at the edge of the sand, making it an exotic and unbeatable destination to spend a beach day without needing a long journey.

  • Available equipment: It features showers, portable toilets, lifeguard service in the summer months, a beach bar right on the sand, and hammock rentals.
  • PRM Accessibility: Direct access to the sand from the town features ramps, although the topography of the area and the layout of the historic huts may limit smooth transit on certain sections of deep sand.
  • Location: Village of Garraf, Sitges (Garraf train station, R2 Sud line).

San Sebastian Beach (Sitges)

Cala Morisca (Sitges)

If you are looking for absolute disconnection while searching for Barcelona beaches in a more secluded natural environment, Cala Morisca is an extraordinary choice. Situated right in the middle of the cliffs of the Garraf coast, this cove is semi-naturist in character and stands out for the extreme purity of its waters.

The transparency of the sea at this point is such that it allows you to observe the rocky and sandy seabed with the naked eye from the surface. It is an enclave highly acclaimed by diving and snorkeling enthusiasts, although it is recommended to arrive early during the weekends of July and August due to its great popularity and the limited dimensions of its sandy area.

  • Available equipment: It features a restaurant-beach bar at the top, toilets, showers, and summer surveillance service. It has a nearby private paid parking lot.
  • PRM Accessibility: Because it is sheltered at the bottom of a cliff, access is via steep stairs, so it is not accessible for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs.
  • Location: Garraf Coast Road (C-31), Sitges.

San Sebastián Beach (Sitges)

Recognized by prestigious international publications like The New York Times as one of the best urban beaches in Europe, this sandy area of barely 200 meters in length is the favorite of Sitges residents. It offers clean, calm, and shallow waters that make it ideal for children to play with complete freedom and safety.

The beach is situated at the foot of the hill where the San Sebastián Hermitage rises, providing the seafront promenade with a beautiful monumental panoramic view. As a cultural curiosity, a section of the original iron railing from San Sebastián’s La Concha Bay is preserved right on the promenade, a gift that seals the twinning of Sitges with the city of San Sebastián in Guipúzcoa, both also sharing the tradition of hosting major international film festivals.

  • Available equipment: Fully equipped with showers, public toilets, rescue and first aid service, sun lounger and umbrella rentals, dining options integrated into the promenade, and local shops.
  • PRM Accessibility: It is fully accessible. It features gentle ramps from the urban promenade, wide wooden walkways on the sand, and adapted toilets.
  • Location: Urban center of Sitges (About a 10-minute walk from the train station).

Cala Morisca

Cala de l’Home Mort (Sitges)

This is actually a set of two small coves (Home Mort and Roses) separated by a natural rocky projection and surrounded by the imposing cliffs of the Garraf massif. It is a naturist space where nudism is practiced with complete freedom.

Being sheltered by the mountain rock, its land access is complex: the only way to reach it is by walking about 15-20 minutes along a dirt path that starts near the parking lot of the former Atlántida nightclub. This geographical difficulty acts as a natural filter, ensuring that the space maintains moderate occupancy and a comforting silence during most of the year.

  • Available equipment: It features a small seasonal beach bar offering drinks and light snacks during the summer months. It does not have showers or permanent toilets.
  • PRM Accessibility: Due to the natural path of dirt and steep stones bordering the cliffs along the train tracks, this cove is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
  • Location: Southern coastline of Sitges, bordering the municipality of Vilanova i la Geltrú.

Cala de Canyadell (Torredembarra)

Located formally on the Costa Dorada, bordering the municipality of Altafulla and just over an hour from Barcelona, Cala de Canyadell is one of the fine, golden sand beaches protected from the winds by a natural amphitheater of limestone cliffs.

It is a location that unites beach relaxation with cultural richness. Just over 200 meters from the sand rises the modern and slender Torredembarra Lighthouse, while about 650 meters away, those interested in archaeology can visit the Roman Villa of Els Munts, a residential settlement from the 2nd century AD listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

  • Available equipment: It features lifeguard service during the summer season, showers, public toilets, and recycling bins. A highly cared-for residential atmosphere is felt.
  • PRM Accessibility: It features access walkways to the sand at the main entrance, facilitating access, although the slope of the surrounding cliffs may require assistance for wheelchair users.
  • Location: Torredembarra, Tarragonès (Easy access by road and medium-distance train).

Cala de la Roca Plana (Tarragona)

This virgin beach boasts the maximum environmental protection distinction within the Plan for Spaces of Natural Interest of Catalonia (PEIN), integrated into the Punta de la Móra – Tamarit ecosystem. Also called Cala Becs, it is a nudist space with difficult land access.

To reach its golden sand, you must make a beautiful excursion on foot through the shaded forest paths of the Bosque de la Marquesa, an area dominated by white pine, savin junipers, and Mediterranean scrub. The effort of the walk is rewarded by the total absence of buildings, beach bars, or mechanical noises.

  • Available equipment: Being a protected virgin beach, it lacks any equipment, showers, toilets, or lifeguard services. Visitors must come equipped with everything necessary for the day.
  • PRM Accessibility: Due to the natural forest path and the walking distance required through the forest, this cove is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
  • Location: Bosque de la Marquesa, Tarragona (About 85 km south of Barcelona).

Cala de la Roca Plana (Tarragona)

Cala Fonda or Waikiki Beach (Tarragona)

Immediate neighbor to Roca Plana, Cala Fonda (popularly baptized as Waikiki Beach due to its resemblance to postcard paradises in Hawaii) is one of the most spectacular and famous virgin beaches in the south of Catalonia. It is located at the foot of a clay cliff that contrasts with the green of the pines and the turquoise blue of the sea.

It is a totally virgin beach, with a nudist tradition and lacking commercial services. An excellent way to approach it is leaving the car in the parking lot of La Mora beach and undertaking the hiking route that runs along the emblematic Camino de Ronda of Tarragona, which advances over the cliffs offering colossal panoramic views.

  • Available equipment: It does not have any type of infrastructure, beach bar, or hygienic services, maintaining its wild purity intact.
  • PRM Accessibility: Access via cliffs and steep dirt paths means this cove is not accessible for people in wheelchairs or with mobility problems.
  • Location: North of Tarragona, next to Camping Las Palmeras.

Heading North: wonders of the Maresme and the Costa Brava

When traveling from Barcelona towards Girona, the Maresme coast treats us to extensive beaches with coarse golden grain sand, ideal for train access. Further north, upon crossing the border of Blanes, the magic of the Costa Brava unleashes: a broken landscape where centennial pines seem to drink directly from the turquoise sea and waves crash forcefully against granitic rock cliffs.

Cala de la Playa de Les Moreres (Montgat)

Located just 15 kilometers north of Barcelona, in the Maresme region, Montgat offers an alternative to Barcelona beaches ideal if you wish to flee from the overcrowding of the capital’s central beaches. Les Moreres cove is a small, family-friendly, and welcoming corner 218 meters in length.

It offers fine-grained sand and a golden color protected by a stone breakwater. As a historical curiosity, the sandy area is adjacent to the hill through which the Barcelona-Mataró railway line runs, the first train established in Spain in 1848. It features a pedestrian and bicycle walkway that runs along the coast, a comfortable parking lot, and a beach bar ideal for cooling off.

  • Available equipment: It features a seasonal beach bar, toilets, showers, bins, a walking path, and surveillance and lifeguard infrastructure.
  • PRM Accessibility: It features direct access ramps and wooden walkways on the wet sand, making it a comfortable and accessible option from the adjacent parking lot.
  • Location: Montgat (Very fast connection via the R1 line of Rodalies, Montgat stop).

Las Rocas Beach (Calella)

Breaking radically with the usual aesthetic of the extensive Maresme beaches, Las Rocas beach in Calella faithfully evokes the steep landscapes of the Costa Brava. It is configured by the intertwining of four beautiful coves: Rocapins, La Vinyeta, Cala d’en Pere, and Roca Grossa.

Its landscape is surrounded by incredibly crystalline waters, rocks, and cliffs crowned by pines. Despite its wild and exotic appearance, the space is situated very close to the urban center of Calella, facilitating easy access on foot or by commuter train, whose station is located practically at the beginning of the sand.

  • Available equipment: It features rescue service in the central summer months, public toilets, showers, and a bar-restaurant in the Roca Grossa area.
  • PRM Accessibility: Access to the inner coves features sections of stairs and steep inclinations in the rock, so general access is complex for people with reduced mobility, limiting comfort to the main area closest to the urban center.
  • Location: Calella, Maresme (R1 line of Rodalies de Catalunya).

Cala Treumal (Blanes)

Blanes is the official gateway to the Costa Brava for Barcelona beaches, a municipality in the La Selva region surrounded by mountains and spectacular coves. Cala Treumal is a small tongue of fine sand that does not exceed 200 meters in length, but encloses superior natural charm.

The water at this point stands out for its extreme cleanliness and the surrounding forested landscapes are impressive. Due to its beauty, it usually records high occupancy during the central weeks of July and August, so local experts advise visiting during June or September to enjoy its original peace.

  • Available equipment: It features lifeguard service, public toilets, showers, hammock and umbrella rentals, and a highly valued beach bar-restaurant serving traditional Mediterranean cuisine.
  • PRM Accessibility: Despite being framed in a forest area, it has accesses enabled via walkways to the sand, allowing correct access, although caution is advised on the slopes of the path down.
  • Location: Northern coastline of Blanes, sharing a border with Lloret de Mar.

Cala Sant Francesc (Blanes)

Cala Sant Francesc (Blanes)

Situated about two kilometers from the center of the municipality, Cala Sant Francesc (also traditionally known as Cala Bona) is an authentic haven of rest for the mind. Its access is extremely simple, both taking a walk on foot from the port or by private car, boasting excellent facilities.

Snorkeling enthusiasts enormously appreciate this location due to the absolute sharpness of its crystalline waters. In addition to swimming, the surroundings of the cove offer safe rocky exploration zones where it is possible to observe a large number of specimens of the indigenous Mediterranean marine flora and fauna.

  • Available equipment: It offers showers, clean toilets, a Red Cross post with lifeguards, pedal boat rentals, hammocks, umbrellas, and an excellent beachfront restaurant.
  • PRM Accessibility: It is an accessible cove. It features adapted ramps, reserved parking spaces for people with reduced mobility, and walkways on the wet sand.
  • Location: Blanes, Girona (About 55 minutes of travel from Barcelona).

Cala Sa Boadella (Lloret de Mar)

Located about 75 kilometers from Barcelona, Lloret de Mar is valued internationally for the quality of its coast. Cala Sa Boadella is a 200-meter stretch of very fine sand reached by descending a narrow path surrounded by a lush pine vegetation.

The environment remains practically virgin from large hotel constructions within sight, which guarantees total silence and tranquility. It is an ideal meeting point to escape urban clamor, connect with the natural environment, and start practicing naturism, which is carried out harmoniously at one of its ends.

  • Available equipment: Equipped with showers, public portable toilets, summer lifeguard service, and a small, pleasant beach bar.
  • PRM Accessibility: Due to the narrow and steep path of sand and natural roots through which you must descend on foot across the pine forest, this cove is not accessible by wheelchair or for people with severe reduced mobility.
  • Location: Outskirts of Lloret de Mar, heading towards Blanes.

Santa Cristina (Lloret de Mar)

Situated right at the foot of the historic Santa Cristina Hermitage, this beach is the communal jewel of the town of Lloret. It is a setting of great beauty surrounded by steep rocks and old pine trees that shelter it from the wind, keeping the sea in an almost perpetual calm.

Its fine sand and the low slope of the seabed have made it one of the most beloved family beaches on the Costa Brava. It has a strong cultural root, as many of the most important traditional acts of the Fiesta Mayor of Lloret de Mar begin on its shore during the summer.

  • Available equipment: It features rescue service, hammock and umbrella rentals, public toilets, showers, refreshment kiosks, and a nearby coastal restaurant.
  • PRM Accessibility: It features a paved access from the upper area of the hermitage, although the slope to descend to the wet sand can be somewhat steep, so accompaniment is recommended.
  • Location: Access for cars signposted from the GI-682 road.

Cala Trons (Lloret de Mar)

Cala Trons (Lloret de Mar)

Cala Trons is one of the most intimate and hypnotizing landscape compositions in the La Selva region. To reach it, you must walk along a path carved between beautiful cliffs of greyish granitic stone.

Once settled in the cove, the only sound that will break the silence is the rhythmic beating of the waves as they crash against the rocky formations of the seabed. Its clear waters show reflections of green and blue hues, forming a natural pool optimal for contemplative rest.

  • Available equipment: It offers fixed showers and a rescue post in the main summer months. Being very small in size, it does not have a beach bar or hammock rentals.
  • PRM Accessibility: The stone path running between the cliffs features steps and topographic irregularities, so it is not accessible for wheelchairs.
  • Location: Northwestern residential area of Lloret de Mar.

Cala del Frares (Lloret de Mar)

This rocky cove seems to have been taken from a painting or a romantic postcard from the 19th century. Its appearance is dominated by large blocks of stone emerging from the water and reefs that dot the shoreline, making it an ideal setting for nature photographers.

Lacking smooth sand, it is not the ideal cove to lie down and sunbathe on a towel in the traditional way, but it is an absolute paradise if you practice rod fishing, diving, or snorkeling, as it houses a formidable biodiversity of fish and algae among its rocks.

  • Available equipment: It does not have any type of service, beach bar, toilets, or showers, maintaining a totally wild spirit centered on the rock.
  • PRM Accessibility: Due to its appearance composed exclusively of large stone blocks and steep reefs, this cove is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
  • Location: At the end of the Camino de Ronda that starts from the Playa Grande of Lloret.

Cala Bona (Tossa de Mar)

Cala Bona (Tossa de Mar)

Tossa de Mar is, by its own merits, one of the municipalities with the greatest historic charm in Catalonia thanks to its walled medieval complex overlooking the sea. About 3 kilometers from its urban center, hidden at the bottom of a narrow sea inlet, is Cala Bona.

It is an extremely small and cozy corner that stands out for the spectacular emerald green color of its waters and its intense Mediterranean scents of pine blossom. It has the historical attraction of housing the mythical Cala Bona beach bar, a small family business founded in 1957 that preserves its traditional essence intact, from when it served breakfast to the town’s fishermen.

  • Available equipment: Its main infrastructure is the famous traditional beach bar which offers toilets to its clients. It does not have public showers or maritime hammock rental services.
  • PRM Accessibility: On-foot access from the nearest road requires descending a narrow natural path with slopes, so it is not considered accessible for people with mobility problems.
  • Location: Tossa de Mar (About 86 kilometers from Barcelona).

Cala Pola (Tossa de Mar)

Situated about 4 kilometers from the town center of Tossa, Cala Pola is a small cove wedged into a superb natural setting where pine-covered mountains are the true protagonists. Its sand is coarse-grained golden and the sea usually remains in absolute calm.

It is a very family-friendly and safe location for children’s bathing. Excellent local advice for romantic souls or couples is to plan the visit to contemplate the sunrise from its shore; the orientation of the cove treats visitors to a truly mystical display of lights and colors over the marine horizon.

  • Available equipment: It features showers, toilets, lifeguard and first aid services, a supermarket, and bars-restaurants thanks to the tourist facilities of the adjacent complex.
  • PRM Accessibility: It features paved accesses that bring the path close to the vicinity of the cove, making visits possible for people with reduced mobility with some assistance on the final stretch of coarse sand.
  • Location: Next to Camping Pola Giverola, Tossa de Mar.

Cala Giverola (Tossa de Mar)

This spectacular cove combines the imposing beauty of a natural environment surrounded by mountains with a complete offer of comfort services (cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby). It is a perfect natural amphitheater if you look for comfort without renouncing the landscape of the Costa Brava.

One of the most recommended and valued activities by people strolling through Cala Giverola is hiring a small ride on a glass-bottom boat. If you choose the time that coincides with sunset, the combination of the Mediterranean climate and the golden colors on the rocks generates a magical atmosphere.

  • Available equipment: It offers a complete range of services: showers, public bathrooms, lifeguards, sun lounger and umbrella rentals, canoe rentals, a water activities center, and multiple restaurants with panoramic terraces.
  • PRM Accessibility: It is accessible. It features ramps and conditioned accesses from the complex’s parking lots that facilitate the approach for people in wheelchairs.
  • Location: Highway from Tossa de Mar to Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Cala Giverola

Cala Futadera (Tossa de Mar)

Popularly known among residents as “the cove of the 300 steps,” Cala Futadera is a practically virgin beach of breathtaking beauty. Its land access requires a dose of physical effort, as it is necessary to descend (and later climb) a long staircase carved into the rock of the cliff.

The reward for the effort is reaching a place totally free of commercial buildings or human alterations. Its waters are of absolute transparency and the atmosphere of isolation felt makes it one of the best coves not only in the surroundings of Barcelona, but on the entire Costa Brava in general.

  • Available equipment: Being an area of virgin character, it lacks any basic equipment, showers, public toilets, or fixed rescue stations.
  • PRM Accessibility: Due to the very long and steep stone staircase necessary to access the coast, this beach is not accessible under any circumstances for people with reduced mobility.
  • Location: Northern stretch of the Tossa de Mar coastline.

Cala Estreta (Palamós)

Located in the Baix Empordà region, about 115 kilometers from Barcelona, Cala Estreta (Narrow Cove) is considered by geographers as one of the most secluded, wild, and beautiful corners of the Catalan coast. It is located in a fully protected environment reached by walking about 20-30 minutes along the Camino de Ronda from Es Castell beach.

Being a virgin environment, visitors must come equipped with their own gear and appropriate footwear, as it is a beach of pebbles and rocks. The landscape stands out for two unique geological formations: “La Roja,” a large projection of reddish rocks that divides the cove into two halves, and “El Drac Adormit” (The Sleeping Dragon), a beautiful rocky islet emerging from the water a few meters from the shore.

  • Available equipment: It features a basic itinerant lifeguard service in the months of July and August and features an old recovered fishermen’s hut in its vicinity, but lacks showers, beach bars, or public toilets.
  • PRM Accessibility: The prolonged 25-minute walk along natural paths of dirt, roots, and slopes of the Camino de Ronda means this cove is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
  • Location: Palamós, Baix Empordà (Approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes of travel from the capital).

Playa de las Barcas or Port Bo (Calella de Palafrugell)

Perfectly integrated into the urban fabric of the beautiful tourist village of Calella de Palafrugell, this beach is one of the most iconic and picturesque in Catalonia. It combines clean, golden sand with the traditional image of wooden fishermen’s boats resting on the shoreline.

The setting is flanked by the traditional arched white porches (les voltes), under which traditional restaurants sit where you can taste local marine gastronomy. In addition, Playa de las Barcas is internationally famous for becoming every summer the floating stage for the traditional “Cantada d’havaneres” of Calella de Palafrugell, a musical festival of enormous popular root throughout Catalonia.

  • Available equipment: It features showers, public toilets, rescue and first aid posts, tourist information points, and a very complete commercial and hotel offer a few meters away on its urban promenade.
  • PRM Accessibility: Access to the promenade and porches is fully accessible, and it features ramps to approach the sandy area, facilitating the experience for everyone.
  • Location: Calella de Palafrugell, Baix Empordà.

To ensure that your sun and beach days on the Catalan coast this 2026 develop with the greatest comfort and safety, we share a series of essential recommendations:

  • Use mobility applications: If you choose to travel by interurban transport or bus, it is highly recommended to download the official apps of operators like Moventis (Sarfa) or the Rodalies de Catalunya app onto your mobile phone. They will allow you to check schedules in real time, see special summer frequencies, and purchase digital tickets comfortably.
  • Be prepared with footwear on the Costa Brava: Unlike the extensive fine sand beaches of the Costa Dorada or Barcelona city, many of the most beautiful coves on the Costa Brava (such as Cala del Frares or Cala Estreta) feature rocky seabeds or pebble surfaces. Bringing water shoes or reef booties along will make a world of difference in comfort when entering and leaving the water.
  • Sustainability and waste management: The vast majority of the virgin coves mentioned in this guide owe their beauty to the absence of daily mechanized cleaning services. Demonstrate your commitment to the environment by carrying back with you all the waste you generate during your stay until you can deposit it in the recycling bins of urban centers.

The coast surrounding Barcelona is an accessible paradise waiting to be explored. From the team at HCC Hotels, we invite you to pack your backpack, select your ideal destination on our map, and prepare to live an unforgettable vacation under the Mediterranean sun. Happy traveling!
