Eager to Explore Barcelona’s Wine Scene? Discover Catalan Wine

By | 15 October, 2022 | 0 comments

Did you know Cataluña is the region of Spain with the most products of origin under its belt? That’s the official way of recognising quality and geographical origin among some of Spain’s finest food and drink producers. The region has eight products of origin in total, specifically wine, alongside Catalan cava. It’s a region full of vines that produce some of the world’s finest vintages. We hope you’ll discover Catalan wine on your next trip!

Penedés, Alella and Pla de Bages, some historic Catalan wines

El Penedés is Cataluña’s greatest wine-producing region, making it a big name in the global wine industry. Vineyards here stretch out over some 27,000 hectares, producing the raw materials required to serve the 188 wineries in the area.

Alella and Pla de Bages are another two of Barcelona’s certified products of origin. Since Roman times, there’s evidence of accounts that allude to these particular types of wine, further proof of the quality and lasting impact of these wines today. Every day, the region works hard to maintain their levels of production, as more and more hectares of vineyards are converted to much needed space for building, reducing the amount of land available as a result.

Traditional vineyards in Cataluña

Fancy a tour of Barcelona’s vineyards in the heart of nature? At HCC Hotels, we recommend you take an excursion into all the bountiful nature and beauty of the region at one of the many vineyards that offer tours nearby.

In the 19th century, in order to recover and cultivate the barren landscapes, a decree was issued to exempt any landowners that cultivated wine from paying taxes. This was the push that led to inland parts of Cataluña becoming viniculture hotspots.

Exploring this industry is a great way to spend time on your trip to the region, as you get to spend plenty of time outdoors in some beautiful surroundings. Lots of excursions are available very close to Barcelona itself. Ask at your hotel for more information and find the right vineyard tour for you!
