How to make your own traditional Sant Jordi rose at home

By | 8 April, 2024 | 0 comments

The celebration of Sant Jordi is always something special! We should never overlook lovely traditions like giving a red rose and a book. At HCC Hotels, we propose a most creative solution: making your own Sant Jordi roses at home!

sant jordi

The origins of this tradition go way back to the 15th century, when men in the region would send the women they liked a special gift on this day. On one such occasion, a rose fair was taking place in the square in front of the Palacio de la Generalitat, and like the stars aligning, the tradition has continued to this very day. Nowadays, it’s one of the most popular festivals in the whole of Cataluña, where the streets bloom in colour and joy emanates around every corner. This year, we’ll have to make do with marking Sant Jordi from home, but to keep some of the magic alive, we’re encouraging everyone to try their hand at making their own rose.

How to make your own Sant Jordi rose

To make your own Sant Jordi rose at home, you’ll need:

  • A small wooden stick (usually used for skewers or ice creams)
  • Some green paint
  • A paintbrush
  • Some red felt or material
  • A CD or similar disc
  • A pen or pencil
  • Scissors
  • Some glue

Once you have all the materials to hand, it’s time to get down to business and start making your rose. It’s very easy to do and suitable for the whole family.

  1. First, paint your wooden stick with the green paint and set it aside to dry.
  2. In the meantime, take the red felt or similar material and, using your pen or pencil, draw an outline of your disc and cut it out.
  3. Next, draw a spiral inside your circle and cut all along the line. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s just a guide.
  4. Then, roll your spiral tightly and stick down the inside edge with glue.
  5. Finally, insert the stick underneath once the paint has dried. Your first Sant Jordi rose is ready to go!

Likewise! We encourage you to check out the instructional video on how to make the Sant Jordi rose through our social media channels!

As you can see, it’s a simple craft that even the youngest members of the family can participate in. You can also create a bouquet by making more Eva foam flowers or add an extra special touch with a letter, a poem, or even a chocolate dessert.
