Outdoor Plans In Barcelona: Discover Montseny Nature Reserve
Just 50km from the Catalan capital, you’ll find Montseny Nature Reserve, a protected area that’s part of the city’s network of natural spaces managed by Barcelona City Council. More specifically, it’s an area home to a wide variety of different species and vegetation, officially declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978.
The park borders 18 different municipalities, divided into three regions: Osona, La Selva and Vallés Oriental. People from all over this part of Spain and tourists alike visit this wonder of nature for its amazing outdoor opportunities and the chance to get to know the surrounding parts of Barcelona a little better.
What to see in Montseny Nature Reserve?
The park offers an environment where plants, animals and landscapes reign supreme, given the space is a highly diverse protected natural area. Furthermore, Montseny dates back to prehistoric times, and over the years megaliths, stone stars, axes and knives have all been found here, evidence that there was life in the area long before the Iberian period. As such, you don’t want to miss the chance to explore this amazing location if you’re heading to Barcelona anytime soon.
Montseny plantlife
Montseny Nature Reserve is set in a stunning, protected location just inland from the Mediterranean, which is what causes the park’s unique plantlife to thrive here, because of the differences in humidity and temperature at higher ground. In fact, the higher you go in this natural environment, the more interesting vegetation you’ll find, including holm and cork oaks, pine and oak groves, and even beech and fir trees when you get above 1,000 metres.
Diverse wildlife
And it’s precisely that diverse vegetation that helps Montseny provide a home to up to 270 different species of animals. The forests in the nature reserve have provided a home to various animals over the centuries, and the littlest explorers in particular love coming here with their families to see which ones they can spot. Look out for everything from wild boar to foxes and even reptiles.
