Barcelona’s beaches are the perfect place for getting active outdoors. In recent years, activities such as volleyball, yoga, swimming and paddle surfing, among others, have become very popular pastimes for both locals and tourists alike who want to enjoy a few days of culture and fun in the great outdoors.
Along the more than 4km of sandy beaches stretching through the Catalan capital there are plenty of options for all tastes. So, if you want to get active on Barcelona’s beaches, below you’ll find a brief selection of some of the best ways to enjoy a day at the beach with a difference.
Firstly, it’s worth noting that besides Barceloneta beach, there are plenty of others where you can sunbathe, cool off in the water and enjoy some sport in Barcelona. For example, the beaches of Somorrostro, Bogatell and Mar Bella are just some of the other great options you’ll find just a few minutes’ from the city centre where you can enjoy all kinds of beach activities.
Barceloneta, Barcelona’s main beach
Without doubt, Barceloneta is one of the city’s favourite beaches due to its accessibility, location and for being one of the largest and oldest around. Along its entire stretch of 578 metres of sand, there are plenty of sporting options to get stuck into, including several beach volleyball courts, a number of table tennis tables, and one of the most popular additions: a free outdoor gym area.
Furthermore, thanks to its central location and conveniently-located promenade, there are plenty of shops where you can rent roller blades, skate boards, bikes and lots of other ways to enjoy your day in the sun.
Playa de Bogatell
Bogatell is another of the most popular beaches in Barcelona. Located just a little further north along the coast than Barceloneta, here you’ll find more than 600m of sand where it’s possible to try your hand at all kinds of sports. You’ll find football, basketball and beach volleyball courts, as well as table tennis tables and a dedicated gym area. In recent years, seeing runners and cyclists enjoying the promenade at Playa Bogatell has become a very common sight indeed.
Barcelona’s beaches: Mar Bella
Mar Bella is a beach that attracts some of the city’s youngest residents. Besides offering plenty of open spaces for enjoying beach volleyball, basketball and table tennis, this Barcelona beach has a watersports centre at its heart, which offers plenty of opportunities for some amazing fun on the waves.
