History and Development of the Palacio Requesens

The palace dates back to the 13th century, when it was built on the Roman wall that bordered medieval Barcelona and took the name of the family who ordered its construction, one of the most important noble families of the 13th century, the Requesens family.

The palace has undergone many changes throughout its long history, the first and one of the most significant taking place in the 15th century. They decided to extend the palace, up to its current size that you can see today, an expansion that was implemented to give the palace greater magnitude, more distinction and greater importance to its inhabitants.

In the 17th century, another refurbishment was ordered, this time to the interior of the palace, along with small improvements to the outside that reflect the current look.

Visiting the Palacio Requesens

Currently, Palacio Requesens serves as the headquarters of the Royal Academy of the Arts, which promotes knowledge of the history and culture of Catalonia.

To visit the palace, we recommend you book before you arrive, as they do not have fixed opening hours, but we strongly suggest you organise an evening visit to really appreciate the experience. Discover the palace and see its beautiful lights and shadows, all offering a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the medieval world.

The Royal Academy of Arts organises public events at the palace, so take advantage of these activities to visit and enjoy some fantastic eventsat the same time.
