Exploring Barcelona by bike is a fantastic way of enjoying and making the most of your trip to the beautiful Spanish city. But riding a bike isn’t just good for the environment, it’s also great for your health.

Barcelona en Bici

Barcelona is a city that’s been working for years to become a shining example of sustainability and better living, as well as improving air quality and the lifestyles of its citizens. In 2015, a plan known as ‘Barcelona’s Bicycle Strategy’ was officially adopted, encouraging more and more people to opt for cycling as a way of getting around the city on a daily basis.

Fast forward five years and cycling facilities and infrastructure have been significantly improved and strengthened throughout the city, including better signalling, training workshops, courses, talks, route planning and more. Not only to improve cycling as a means of transport, but also to improve its coexistence alongside other road and path users, as well as safer riding and driving overall. Make no mistake, Barcelona offers an extensive network of bike paths and lanes and you can find them all clearly marked on this map.

Tours exploring Barcelona by bike. Let’s ride!

We can suggest a number of great tours for exploring Barcelona by bike to help you make the most of your stay, given you can see multiple points of interest in much less time when you’re on two wheels. In Barcelona, you’ll find everything from fully guided tours with bikes thrown in for free to other options where there are a few suggested itineraries that you can personalise, or simply bicycle rental schemes where you can tour the city at your own pace.

Pick the option that suits you best, but here are just a few of the best places we think you can’t afford to miss when hopping on your bike and exploring the wonderful city of Barcelona:

  • Passeig de Gracia, where you’ll find Casa Batllò, Casa Amatller and La Pedrera.
  • Las Ramblas and Barcelona Cathedral
  • Sagrada Familia: one of the top points of interest in the city that you simply have to visit. No trip to Barcelona would be complete without a stop at one of the world’s most famous basilicas.
  • Plaza Cataluña, the beating heart of Barcelona.
  • Parque Güell: a modernist park recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Iglesia de Santa María del Mar, one of the best examples of Catalan Gothic architecture, close to the famous Born market.
  • Arc del Triomf
  • Colombus viewpoint: from this stunning lookout point, at the top of the monument, you’ll be able to enjoy some of the very best views of the city.
  • El Paseo Marítimo promenade
  • Montjuïc Mountain and the Olympic Park Zone
  • In Tibidabo, there’s a dedicated cycle zone: Passeig de les Aigües.

If you prefer to keep things more organised, there are all kinds of great city tours run by a number of companies to enjoy Barcelona by bike, including some themed tours aimed at visiting certain parts of the city in unique style, including guided tours at night, historical tours, as well as those focussing on certain neighbourhoods or the various architectural styles you’ll find throughout the city.

Bike rental in Barcelona

There are plenty of options when it comes to renting a bike in the city. One is provided by the city council itself, Bicing, where you can hop on and off communal bikes with collection and drop-off points scattered throughout the city. But you can always simply rent a bike for a few hours from a traditional rental agency to use at your leisure.
