Palacio Moja, uncover all its hidden secrets
A palace that once housed the city’s high bourgeoisie in the 18th and 19th centuries is how Palacio Moja came to be known. It was designed and built by Josep Mas, the architect commissioned to build the palace by Josep de Copons, the Marquis of Moja, and his wife, Maria Lluïsa Descatllar.
Construction began in 1774 and it was officially opened in 1789.Through the various baroque architectural features and neoclassical interiors, you’ll be able to see just why Palacio Moja became one of the most important buildings on the whole of Las Ramblas.
In 1860, Palacio Moja was acquired by the Marquis of Comillas after the last-surviving member of the Moja family passed away without leaving any children. That same year, the palace underwent a wide-reaching renovation to adapt the premises and repair damaged roofs and façades.
But that wouldn’t be the last renovation the palace would see. In 1934, Count Güell, Joan Antoni Güell López, bought the palace and carried out yet another comprehensive renovation, which can still be seen today.
During the Spanish Civil War, the palace suffered damage to the interiors, destroying much of the internal decorations, artworks and furniture. However, some parts were able to be preserved and survive to this day.
In 1969, the palace was declared a site of historic and artistic significance, resulting in numerous restorations being carried out to put the site’s former splendour firmly back on display. When visiting, you can admire the elegant marble staircase, the great hall, which is three-floors high and has enormous windows that give you an insight into all the secrets of its construction, as well as the Verdaguer Chapel, which perfectly showcases Palacio Moja’s true beauty.
At HCC Hotels, we’d encourage you to visit the palace and discover all the secrets it holds within.Enjoy a unique visit to Barcelona as you uncover a whole host of hidden treasures you weren’t expecting.
